13th/14th Century Medieval Carved Stone Gargoyle Corbel

£395.00

Description
A superb Medieval period carved stone grotesque/gargoyle corbel. The Corbel is English and likely to be limestone and dates to circa 1300 - 1400.
Gargoyles were originally used in architecture in the 13th century, often gargoyles were used to disperse water from the roof gutter or part of the building to keep it clear of walls or foundations. This corbel is actually known as a 'Grotesque' due to it being purely for aesthetics and it doesn't have any way of dispersing water.
This corbel would've been carved on the ground and then put in place when the building was near completion.

This is a stunning piece of English architecture and is expertly carved with an eye catching expression.
As the photos show, there are some slight losses to the piece, however this can be expected with age.
We have two similar corbels on our other listings, a deal can be made if all three are required!

This corbel is far too heavy to post so it will have to be delivered by our trusted, independent courier so please message us for a quote!
